Scientifically grounded, yet still little known to the general public – this is exactly how exosomes can be described. Although exosomes are not a Korean invention, but rather natural biological particles found in the human body, South Korea is currently one of the leaders in applying exosomes in cosmetics. Korean brands were the first to offer products with exosomes, which not only soothe but also actively restore the skin and stimulate its regeneration.
What are exosomes?
Exosomes are microscopic nano-particles secreted by cells that contain proteins, lipids, growth factors, and genetic information (microRNA). These particles act as intermediaries between cells – they transmit signals that stimulate renewal, healing, and strengthening processes in the skin.
Because of this property, exosomes are particularly relevant in skincare – they can stimulate collagen and elastin production, regulate inflammatory processes, accelerate healing, and improve overall skin condition.
Types of exosomes by origin
- Human-derived exosomes – extracted from human tissues (e.g., adipose or placental tissue). Although they are very effective, their use in cosmetics is strictly restricted or prohibited in many countries due to safety, infection, and ethical risks.
- Animal-derived exosomes – obtained from animal tissues, most commonly bovine. Their structure is similar to human exosomes, but due to their origin, they are also more strictly regulated.
- Plant-derived exosomes – extracted from plants such as roses, rice, ginseng, broccoli, or green tea. Although their action is milder, they are safe, stable, and widely used in cosmetics, especially in the European Union.
Where can exosomes be used?
In Asia:
- Exosomes, especially those of human or animal origin, are widely applied not only in cosmetics but also in aesthetic procedures.
- They are often used via injection (microneedling, mesotherapy, etc.), especially in Korea, Japan, or Thailand.
- Here, exosome cosmetics are already well-established, and the results speak for themselves – firmer, smoother, faster-regenerating skin.
In Europe:
- Human-derived exosomes are prohibited for use in cosmetics or aesthetic medicine (unless it is an approved medication).
- Injectable use of exosomes for cosmetic purposes is also illegal.
- Plant-derived exosomes are legal, safe, and permitted in cosmetic products under EU Regulation No. 1223/2009. Therefore, products enriched with plant-based exosomes are currently the only safe and permitted option.
Why are exosomes relevant for your skin?
- For mature skin with reduced elasticity
- For skin with fine lines and pigmentation
- For irritated, sensitive skin after procedures
- For skin with inflammation, acne, or scarring
- For dehydrated, dull facial skin

In summary
Exosomes are not just a trendy novelty, but a scientifically grounded future technology in skincare. Although their use varies across regions – with stricter requirements applied in the European Union – plant-derived exosomes already allow for this innovation to be used safely and effectively.
If you are looking for deep, modern, and safe skincare, exosomes are something definitely worth trying.
